How do I take care of my new tattoo?

Most tattoos will need to be covered with Derm Shield for the first 24 hours. We recommend returning to our shop the next day for a free bandage change. You will wear the second Derm Shield bandage for 3 days. After 3 days, you may carefully remove the second bandage under a gentle stream of warm water and use a gentle fragrance-free soap to loosen the adhesive if necessary. After removing the bandage, gently clean your tattoo with fragrance-free soap in circular motions until all of the blood and lymphatic fluid is removed. A clean paper towel may be used to gently pat the tattoo dry. Be careful not to rub or scrub your fresh ink!
Always wash your hands with soap and water before touching your fresh tattoo! DO NOT use washcloths, bath towels, bath sponges, or loofahs on your tattoo.
Once you have removed your bandage, cleaned and dried your tattoo, you may use a thin layer of AQUAPHOR or a gentle, fragrance-free lotion like AVEENO to keep your tattoo moisturized during the healing process. During the first few days your tattoo may "weep", meaning that plasma and ink form a thin moist coating on the skin. You may dab this coating dry with a clean paper towel. After a few days a thin scab will form over your tattoo as it heals, DO NOT pick at or scratch your new tattoo.
Clean your tattoo 1-2 times a day, do not clean it anymore than absolutely necessary as over-cleaning a new tattoo can be more harmful than good. Avoid completely submerging your fresh tattoo in water for the first two weeks as this can cause the scab to fall off pre-maturely. Only get your tattoo wet when you need to clean it, you may shower normally but do your best to keep the tattoo out of the direct stream of water. Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, the ocean, and lakes for the first 2 weeks as this can expose your fresh tattoo to infectious bacteria and chemicals like chlorine.
